DRIVING ISSUES

At Caregiver Mediation Network we look at the deeply rooted causes to conflict.

We ask you to now think of how you felt the first day you received your driver's license.    This was the first time you were able to drive away - independently - from your family, and the beginning of creating your own family.

This intense fear of loss of this independence is what makes it so very difficult to talk with your senior loved one and fellow family members about “taking away the keys”.

Our goal in Elder Mediation is to first carefully review all the safety issues, then work closely with the family to see if there are local transportation alternatives which would be acceptable by the elder and their family members.

Almost always there are appropriate solutions... it just takes teamwork.

Driving Questions To Ask

If everyone in the family agrees about what is in the best interest of your senior loved one, then there is no need to engage in the process of elder mediation.  But in real-life that is rarely the case.  You might choose to participate in the process of elder mediation to resolve one of more thorny conflicts between family members.

Elder Mediators are trained to bring the parties to a resolution without taking sides for either one.  Elder Mediators are knowledgeable in all aspects of the issues surrounding eldercare and they have expertise and experience to help the parties avail themselves of the community resources that can aid in problem resolution and provide support and assistance in the process of caring for a senior loved one.

·         Elder Mediators are first and foremost impartial.
·         Elder Mediators help families find a mutually agreeable conflict resolution.
·         Elder Mediator’s role is as a neutral catalyst to help resolve the conflict.
